- Chelsea are poised to secure the signing of Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP in an unexpected move.
- The young player had strong ties to Manchester United and was anticipated to reconnect with his previous mentor Ruben Amorim.
- It was reported that The Red Devils intended to use him as a wingback, yet he opted for the Blues instead.
Chelsea reached an agreement with Sporting CP to sign teenage winger Geovany Quenda.
The teenager who is 17 years old was heavily connected to Manchester United, yet Chelsea intervened to secure another promising young talent instead.
The Portuguese national team member made his senior debut under Ruben Amorim and will now belong to Chelsea for several years.
Goevany Quenda chooses Chelsea over Manchester United
As reported by The Athletic, Chelsea has come to terms with Sporting regarding the transfer of Quenda. The young player is anticipated to ink a contract valid till 2033; however, he will become part of the Blues roster in 2026.
The report also mentions that Manchester United looked into securing a deal in January, though it did not come to fruition.
The Blues plan to utilize Quenda strictly as a winger. Previously, he operated as a wingback under Amorim prior to the manager’s move to Manchester United. This season, Quenda has featured in 43 matches for Sporting and contributed with eight assists.
Why Manchester United didn't secure Quenda
The Red Devils did not submit a bid for Quenda, according to MEN before Chelsea's deal with Sporting.
The team, who have won the English title 13 times, had discussions with prominent agent Jorge Mendes in November; however, according to the report, the club’s involvement was limited to preliminary conversations.
The acquisition of Patrick Dorgu by another club in January affected their interest in the young Portuguese player, whom Amroim had given his first-team debut at the age of 16.
It was reported that Amorim desired a reunion with his previous protege from their time at Old Trafford. There were assertions suggesting that they aimed to bring him onboard as a signing on the final day of the recent transfer window.
Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos took over the management of the football operations at the club, they have been quite prudent with their spending.
He has been included in Portugal's team for their upcoming matches in the Nations League against Denmark. On the field, he will join forces with ex-Sporting players Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.
Top responses to Quenda ignoring Manchester United
@DeanJonesSoccer:
The Quenda news is huge! United went to sleep rejoicing over an excellent victory... Only to wake up and find out that one of their key summer targets is heading to Chelsea instead 😬 Ouch.
@ManafA193:
How is Quenda moving to Chelsea? He fits well into Manchester United’s system, and his previous manager is now with us. It doesn’t make any sense at all.
@UnitedPeoplesTV:
Manchester United cannot match this kind of madness. An 8-year deal coupled with lending him back for a whole season. Chelsea will keep gathering young talent and then turn them into profit. They are utterly detrimental to the world of football.
@Zmufc7:
Although we might be ready to invest nearly that amount, the agreement would benefit Sporting more since they can retain his services for an entire year instead of us getting him immediately. It’s certainly disappointing not to secure our priority player, yet such a significant sum leaves room for alternative choices; after all, it’s still early April.
