Piper: The Secret Weapon Behind the Doctor Who Reboot - Davies

Russell T Davies, the showrunner of Doctor Who, mentioned that he never imagined the series would continue for two decades since its comeback.

It's A Sin founder Davies, aged 61, hails from Swansea, revived the beloved science fiction series in 2005 .

His " secret weapon," he stated, was actress Billie Piper, known for portraying the Doctor's sidekick, Rose Tyler.

Piper, who was 42 at the time, appeared alongside Christopher Eccleston for one season, starting on March 26, 2005. Afterward, Scottish actor David Tennant assumed the role as the 10th version of the Time Lord.

"It all seemed extremely significant," Davies said to Radio Times.

I've been a fan of Doctor Who throughout my lifetime, and I believe its comeback has demonstrated that it's indestructible.

But back then, it didn't seem like that. It felt more like my final opportunity at the saloon.

The show returned over 15 years following its cancellation by CDRNEWS, having completed a 26-year run.

Davies mentioned that during the buildup to the transmission, he felt they possessed a secret weapon, which happened to be Billie Piper.

"Everyone knew Christopher Eccleston was a great actor, but knowing how good Billie was, was a terrific feeling.

Regarding the program's structure, he commented, "It’s unparalleled in television storytelling, much like the anthological approach of Doctor Who, which makes bold transitions between episodes."

In 2023, Tennant came back to the series. and played the role of the 14th Doctor in three special episodes celebrating the show's 60th anniversary.
