GRSE Sets Record with Simultaneous Contractor Sea Trials for Two Warships

Kolkata (West Bengal), India — On March 3, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd successfully concluded the Contractor Sea Trials for two vessels, as stated in an official statement from ANI. This achievement aligns with GRSE’s dedication to providing high-standard ships to both the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.

As stated in the announcement, both ships are currently under construction by GRSE for the Navy.

The warships that finished their CSTs concurrently include the Himgiri (Yard 3022) and Androth (Yard 3035). The Himgiri represents an Advanced Frigate and serves as the lead vessel among three similar ships currently under construction for the Navy’s Project 17A by GRSE. In contrast, Androth stands as the second unit within a batch of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft vessels also being constructed at this facility, as per official statements.

The CST phase marks the conclusion of construction when a ship’s seaworthiness is put to the test. Various aspects including velocity, handling capabilities, and functionality of installed systems are evaluated during this period. For these particular vessels, representatives from GRSE, the Indian Navy, along with experts from classification organizations, were present aboard both naval ships to oversee their operational effectiveness.

The Critical System Test (CST) for INS Arnala (Yard 3029), which is the initial Anti-Submarine Warfare Surface Combatant Ship (ASW SWC), has also been successfully concluded, and delivery to the Navy will occur soon.

PRO Defence Kolkata praised the accomplishment in a tweet on X.

GRSE has successfully concluded Contractor Sea Trials for two warships, Himgiri (an Advanced Frigate) and Androth (designed for Anti-Submarine Warfare), on the same day, achieving a significant landmark in shipbuilding. The completion of INS Arnala’s sea trials further advances this progress, bringing the navy nearer to incorporating these advanced vessels into service.
