Since Mikel Arteta took over, he has been in charge of 200 Premier League matches. Arsenal In 2019 — however, how does his record compare with the best managers in the tournament’s history?
We have compared Arteta’s performance over his initial 200 games against the opening 200 matches of Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, and Rafa Benitez during their tenures in the Premier League.
In December 2019, Arteta assumed leadership of a disorganized Arsenal squad and at first found it challenging to improve the team's performance significantly.
However, the Spaniard ultimately turned around Arsenal's fate for the better, leading the team to mount strong challenges for the Premier League title in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.
In the 2024-25 season, Arsenal find themselves in second place again, though they remain significantly behind the frontrunners Liverpool. Despite this, Arteta has managed to instill a sense of stability into what was once a declining powerhouse, even if he hasn’t yet secured any major trophies to reflect their improved form.
In his initial 199 Premier League matches, where he secured 118 victories — ranking him fifth among all managers for the highest number of wins within their debut 200 league games — Arteta has unquestionably positioned himself as one of the era’s top managerial talents.
Only Guardiola, Mourinho, Klopp, and Ferguson have a higher winning percentage than him when considering their first 200 games.
"I am extremely proud to reach this milestone, but now our focus is on the future," Arteta stated ahead of his landmark game against Manchester United.
